Disney and His Worlds
Alan Bryman
The book Disney and His Worlds (1995/2005) is a thorough review of Disney organization as a theme park and its significant in contemporary culture.
The book explains Disney and his world on two grounds. First, Bryman gave a factual account of Walt Disney’s life, how his biography got constructed and what exactly happens to the Disney organization after his death. Second, Bryman raises some important questions on Disney Theme Park: Whether they are indicators postmodernism; the significance of consumption, nature of park as tourism, and representation of past and future. During this discussion the book question the parks as a site of postmodern sensibility in two sections. Section one with the biographical sketch and development of Disney as a theme park in the reign of the Disney troika 1966-71, the year of languish 1971-1984, and Disney under new management 1984 to present and section two discuss theming, merchandizing, control, predictability, and consumption as a major feature of Disneyland; with the help of literatures available in the archives.
In the current social reality, the theme parks are center of an attraction in terms of contemporary tourism, entertainment, and consumption by focusing on the fantasy and the magic. Hence it is important to understand how Disney showed their central business and economic development as an organization characterized by Disney films, marketing, and theme park. Therefore, it is known as more effective element of American Cultural Imperialism.
Overall, the book is providing useful document of a good resource and a literature review of available archives for the lecturers, students, and others in the field of cultural studies, qualitative research, leisure and tourism studies, organization studies, sociology of culture, sociology of consumption and urban studies
The strength of this book is that this is an excellent critical review of multiple work taken place on Disneyland as a theme park which gives an opportunity for the readers to enhance their skills of writing and critical thinking Even if that still there are limitations can be found on the grounds of practical reality because the book is highly based on the archives therefore, many aspects of Disney Themes Park remain to explore. Still, Bryman try to overcome from that and explore these remaining aspects of culture and politics in his further research and writing of Disneyization of Society 2004
