Volpone
By Ben Johnson
Ben Jonson was an important English playwright known for his satirical comedies. His play Volpone, considered one of his most significant works, satirizes human vices like greed, vanity, and hypocrisy. The plot involves a wealthy man named Volpone who pretends to be on his deathbed in order to trick people into giving him gifts in hopes of becoming his heir. He is aided in his deceptions by his servant Mosca. Through the characters and their deceptions, Jonson critiques the corrupt society of 17th century Venice and its excesses.
