First Published in 1982, this book is a masterpiece of Indian Literature offering a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living in a small town.
The book comprises 32 short stories each unique and captivating in its own way .The stories revole around the lives of the people of Malgudi, exploring themes such as love, family friendship and the human condition from the nostalgic tale of ‘A Horse and Two Goats’ to the poignant story of ‘The Doctors Word ‘each narrative is a window into the complexities of human relationships.
Narayan explores various themes throughout the book including:
i) The simplicity of life: Malgudi Days celebrates the simplicity and beauty of life in a small town where people live in harmony with nature.ii) Human relationships: The stories highlight the complexities of human relationships, showcasing the depths of love friendship and family bonds.

‘मालगुडी डेज’ या पुस्तकाचा आशय वेगवेगळ्या विषयांना काही निवडक प्रसंगांच्या माध्यमातून वाचकांसमोर मांडणे व वाचकांनी त्यांच्या स्वतःच्या आयुष्यात असे कधी अनुभवले का? यावरती विचार करायला भाग पाडणारे हे पुस्तक आहे. माणसांच्या वेगवेगळ्या कला गुणांपासून ते प्रबळ इच्छाशक्ती आणि सकारात्मकतेच्या जोरावर कोणतेही यश मिळवीत येते व काळप्रसंगी मृत्यूलाही मात देता येते असा सकारात्मकबोध देताना हे पुस्तक माणसा माणसातील स्नेह संबंधाचे धागेही आपसूकच गुंफत जाते.
डॉ. व रुग्णाची कहाणी खूपच सुंदर शब्दात यामध्ये वर्णन केलेले आहे. रामू नावाचा एक डॉक्टर एका गावात राहत असतो आणि तो रुग्णाबद्दल जे सांगेल तेच अंतीम सत्य असा विश्वास सर्व गावकऱ्यांमध्ये होता. तो डॉक्टर कधीही खोटे बोलून रुग्णाला आत्मविश्वास दिल्यास तो जगू शकतो यावर विश्वास ठेवणारा नव्हता. पण हा नकारात्मक तेचा भाव आहे, हे समजण्यास त्याला उशीर झाला.जेव्हा त्याचा स्वतःचा मित्र हृदय विकाराच्या झटक्यामुळे मरण शय्येवर पडलेला होता तेव्हा पहिल्यांदा त्या डॉक्टरने खोटे बोलून सकारात्मक भाव त्याच्या मित्राच्या मनात निर्माण केला व या सकारात्मक तेच्या जोरावर त्याच्या मित्राने येणाऱ्या मृत्यूवर विजय मिळविला. तेव्हा डॉक्टर ला समजले की सकारात्मक शब्दांमध्ये ताकद असते व एखाद्याच्या भल्यासाठी बोलले गेलेले खोटे हे चुकीचे नसते तर नैतिकतेच्या पटलावर असे खोटे सुद्धा नैतिक च ठरते असा बोध लेखक सुचवू पाहत आहे.
दुसऱ्या एका कथेमध्ये एक फौज मध्ये काम करणारी व्यक्ती व नंतर तीच एका कंपनीत काम करते कालांतराने सेवानिवृत्त होते व मातीपासून सुंदर वस्तु बनविण्याचा छंद जोपासते. व आपण काम करीत असलेल्या कंपनीचा एक सुंदर मनोरा बनवून कंपनीतील मनेजर ला भेट देते. मनेजर खुश होऊन एक पत्र पाठवतात.व कामाचे कौतुक करीत १०० रुपये बक्षीस ही देतात.पण भीतीपोटी तो ते पत्र च उघडीत नाही.कारण त्या कंपनीच्या मनोऱ्यामध्ये त्याने स्वतःला देखील दाखविलेले असले यामुळे साहेब चिडले असतील व पेन्शन बंद केली असेल असा न्यूनगंड वा भ्रामक समज त्याच्या मनात निर्माण झाला. व तो स्वतःला वेडा म्हणवून घेवू लागतो. पण नंतर त्याला जेव्हा वास्तव समजते. तेव्हा त्याला कळते की तो एक न्यूनगंड होता.
यातून लेखक असे सांगू इच्छितो की माणसाने कसलाही खोटा समज करून घेत घाबरून जीवन जगण्यापेक्षा वास्तवाला सामोरे जात योग्यतो निर्णय घेतल्यास स्वतःचे आयुष्य सुखकर व आनंदी बनविता येते.
एकंदरीत या पुस्तकातून ‘मालगुडी डेज’ याचा अर्थच असा आहे. की रोजचे जीवन जगत असताना (मालगुडी) येणाऱ्या सर्व प्रसंगांना शोर्याने सामोरे जात कधी शांत राहून तर कधी योग्य कृती करून आपण जीवनाचा दिलखुलास आनंद घेवू शकतो. असा मार्मिक संदेश देणारे हे पुस्तक नक्कीच नाउमेद झालेल्या व्यक्तीच्या मनात रंग भरते व त्याला आयुष्य जगण्यासाठी प्रेरित करते.
