Recently, I read an interesting book titled Love, Ruby Lavender, written by the famous American author Deborah Wiles. It was published in 2001, and I believe this book would be the right reading level for 4th or 5th graders.

The book is a fictional story about Ruby Lavender, a 10-year-old tomboy who lives in Hallelujah, Mississippi. Her best friend is her grandmother, Miss Eula Dapplevine. Throughout a busy summer, Ruby steals chickens. I truly loved reading this book. The characters are humorous, and the letters exchanged between them are interesting. One of my favorite parts was when and how Melba Jane’s hair turned blue. Another part keeps you guessing about Ruby’s grandfather and grandmother. By the end of the book, I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to the characters.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor and who cares about family. I wouldn’t suggest this book if you don’t laugh because there are so many funny events. Some parts of the book are sad, but those sad moments are important to the story. If you want to read about the hilarious adventures of a girl and her chickens, then this is the book for you.

Summary: Ruby Lavender used to have a good life. She and her grandmother, Miss Eula, were inseparable. They even drove a Gateway car together to rescue chickens.
