Slow Man by J.M.Coetzee
The book by author J.M.Coetzee who is famous for having won the Nobel Prize for literature in the year 2014. The book, Slow Man talks about the protagonist of the story Mr. Paul Rayment. An old man who happens to be struck by a perilous accident on the Magill Road while cycling brings him to the hospital where he is informed about the terrible condition of his knee and that his leg required to be amputed. With no one alive in his family, this situation puts him into a dilemma. Mr.Paul is also informed that once his prosthesis is successfully alone, he shall require a nurse who could take ‘Care of the frail’ until he recovers fully to be mobile and independent. This is where we are introduced to Marijana who is hired to take care of Mr. Paul. Capable enough, the plot of the book builds around the fact that the private nurse and her patient happen to share a common European childhood, however they were based differently, in Croatia and France. This leads to Paul falling in a complicated relationship with Marijana but is visited by the mysterious writer Elizabeth Castello who challenges him to take an active role in his life. Elizabeth gives him an offer to live with her however Paul decline such an offer. The language of the book is standard however easy to interpret foe readers who are well versed in English.
It is highly recommendable for young adults since the book talks about a number of themes distinctly. the nature of care and relationship between the characters of the book has been elaborately described along with the man’s drive to leave a legacy. Thus Coetzee’s book is a bracing corrective to the blustering do not go gentle analysis by the New York Times.
