The Mahabharata, a timeless epic of myth and history—has been told and retold through countless perspectives. But have you ever wondered how it would unfold through the eyes of a woman?
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s the Palace of Illusions offers a mesmerizing retelling, reimagined from the perspective of Draupadi, one of the most complex and compelling figures in Indian mythology.
Through Panchaali’s voice, Divakaruni presents a narrative that is part history, part myth, and entirely magical. The novel delves into the psyche of a woman often admired yet equally scorned—Draupadi, the enigmatic queen whose prophecies and actions shaped the course of history. Born of fire and destiny, Panchaali’s journey begins in a lonely childhood, filled with longing to escape the confines of her palace and witness the world as men do.
This tale beautifully captures the dynamics of her relationships, particularly the divine companionship between Krishna and “Krishnaa” (the name Krishna affectionately gives her), and her unbreakable bond with her brother Dhri. It portrays her fiery pride, her unrelenting temper, and her vengeful spirit, elements that define why she was named after the spirit of the land itself.
The novel also explores the fractured friendship between Drona and Draupad, the tragedies of Karna’s life intertwined with Draupadi’s mysteries, and the bitter enmity that shapes their destinies.
Her yearning for independence and her search for identity connected me deeply.
And on top of everything the authors writing style hooked me more than the tale she recited.
Two quotes from the book that stayed with me are:
“A problem becomes a problem only if you believe it to be so. And often others see you as you see yourself.” – Krishna
“Wait for a man to avenge your honor and you’ll wait forever.”– Sikhandi
The palace of illusions is a story that blends history, emotions and mythology into a narrative that feels descending yet captivating.
If you are someone who love ancient myth with a touch to accept a different side of a story this book is definitely for you.
Happy reading!!
