About the Author –
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October, 1869-30 January, 1948), also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was an Indian leader, freedom fighter, lawyer, politician, social activist and writer.
His popular works include. Hind Swaraj India of My Dreams, From Yeravda Mandir: Ashram Observances in Action, The Story of My Experiments with Fruth (Autobiography) among many other works. The Story of My Life’ is a shortened version of his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth. His writings focus on self-discipline, spiritual growth and social reform.
Gandhi was bom in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He was bom and brought up in a family that had very strong moral values. Gandhiji showed the path o Truth (Satya) and Non violence (Ahimsa) not only to the nation but also the world. He led major movements such as Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience. Movement and Quit India Movement. His fight for freedom through non-violence and truth, simple living, self-resilience, lethical conduct, sacrifice for others, compassion made him ‘Father of the Nation’ as well as “Mahatma”. He and his thoughts influenced many including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.”
Summary of the Novel –
“The Story of My Life” by Mahatma Gandhi is an autobiographical account in which Gandhi reflects on his joumey from childhood to detailing his adulthood, personal struggles, philosophies and transformative experiences
Gandhi starts by recounting his childhood in Porbandar, India, his education. He family and early was deeply influenced by parent’s values, especially his mother’s devout spirituality & his fathers integrity. struggles He writes about his Initial with fear and self-doubt, which led him. explore the concepts of truth and non-violence.
Gandhi also talks about his time in England, where he studied law. He struggled with adapting to Westem style (lifestyle) and values but ultimately became more determined in his pursuit of truth. Gandhi’s time in South Africa marks a tuming point in his life, where he faced racial discrimmation. His experiences here led him to develop
the philosophy of Satyagrahay personal history but also Life” is not only a profound spiritual Parld philosophical treatise on the principles that guided Gandhi’s life and mission.
Critical Evaluation-
In the book, Mahatma Gandhi conveys his experiences and emotions with truth. As the book is written by Mahatma Gandhi, it has more truth than creative liberty. As the book is on autobiographical novel it is in the first person marration. The novel is very engaging. Gandhi has used the storytelling technique very effectively in the novel that results in the strong engagement of the reader with the text. All the experiences, incidents & memories of Mahatma Gandhi directly and indirectly portray his own character deeply. However, other characters are not that deeply portrayed in the novel. The novel is successful at reflecting its time period and culture effectively. The book has simplified language as it is the shortened version of Gandhi’s autobiography, designed specially for Indian school students. The book is successful at inspiring and enlightening readers. The novel leaves a lasting impression on reader’s minds & hearts just as Mahatma Gandhis thoughts and character. The novel is highly recommendable to every Indian reader.
My View-
“The Story of My Life” by M.k. Gandhi is the shortened version of Gandhi ji’s autobiography “The Story of My Experiments with Truth. The Story of My Life’ offers insights into Gandhiji’s transformation from a shy, ordinary individual into a global symbol of peace and resilience. The book is a compelling narrative of the journey of one of the greatest leaders of modern history. It is a simple yet profound account of Gandhi’s life, values & his commitment to truth and non-violence.
Gandhiji, The autobiography reveals that the father of the nation, got values, his morals, character and all else from his parents and family. His father was truthful, brave, generous & short-tempered while his mother was deeply religious. It were his parents and environment in which he was brought up that made him truthful, virtuous & righteous. Gandhiji’s qualities, morals & true nature are reflected in the beginning of the novel.
The book gives a detalled account of experiences and incidents of Gandhiji’s life. Majority of incidents mentioned in the book are not known to the readers. The book gives an insight into the reality of his life. Gandhi mentions his mistakes in life such as eating meat, smoking, ete very truthhilly and boldly. Truth rules the pages of his autoblography. The novel is successful in imagery.

Due to the narrative style, storytelling Hechnique, first persen narration the reader gets a feeling that he is in touch with Gandhiji as long as he is reading the novel. While reading the reader feels that he is accompanied by Gandhiji in his life. He is also transported to the time of Gandhiji. The end of the novel has warm and truthful message for a the readers. A light cry in heart and tears in eyes are experienced by the reader because of departing from Gandhiji at the last chapter.
