When I first pickup this book, I was really impressed by the book as this book takes us on a heart-wrenching journey through Greek mythology bringing to life the epic story of love, fate, and heroism. If you are a fan of mythology, romance or beautifully written prose, this one’s for you. But, does it live up to the hype? Let’s find out .
Summary:
The story begins with the life of Partroclus, a young exiled prince , and his deep bond with Achilles ,the legendary warrior and son of a goddess. Their bond grows over the years developing from friendship to something much deeper set against the backdrop of the Trojan war, unlike traditional retellings that focus on war and glory , Miller’s version is a tender, character-driven tale humanizes these mythic figures.
The theme of love is central to this novel, but its love in all its forms – romantic, friendly and even the love between a warrior and his fate. Patroclus and Achilles are the main character in this novel . Patroclus is a character who is humble, introverted, but deeply compassionate. He contrasts sharply Achilles, who is fierce almost untouchable and destined for greatness.
Miller’s writing style in this novel is lyrical and deeply immersive and her prose are poetic. The Song Of Achilles succeeds in developing its characters in a way that makes them both mythic and deeply human. Patroclus and Achilles are iconic figures of Greek mythology and their development over the course of novel allows readers to connect with their struggles, dreams and ultimately their tragic destines. The Song of Achilles starts slowly focusing on Patroclus and Achilles growing up and forming bond. As the Torjan war begins the pace picks up, especially when Patroclus dies which is sad. After that the story slows down again letting us reflect on what happened.
There aren’t many surprising plot twist , but the emotions, especially around Patroclus death and Achilles grief hits hard. The Song of Achilles is about love, love that is passionate pure and tragic. The emotional weight of the story leaves a lasting impression making it difficult to put the book down. I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles which is beautifully developed.
While the novel is universally praised, one weakness of this novel which I feel is its slow start.
I personally got connected with The Song Of Achilles through the deep emotional bond between Patroclus and Achilles. I think, The Song of Achilles relates to a lot of broader issues that are still very much present today . The themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice really have intended effect.
The Song Of Achilles is a beautifully written profoundly moving novel that breathes life into ancient myths. Whether you are a fan of Greek Mythology this book is must read . I will rate this book 4.5 out of 5. And highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable reading experience.
