Five Point Someone: What Not to Do at IIT is a 2004 novel written by Indian author Chetan Bhagat. This is Chetan Bhagat’s first book.
This novel tells the story of three IIT graduates and their lives in India’s premier technology institute. The story is about their friendship and differences, studies and happiness, career and ambition, parental pressure and peer pressure, love and sex.
This book is very good for all the people who are under a lot of stress. It is based on its true story and is very useful for all college students. It is good for every student as it shows the life of three types of students which are more common in India.
Characters in this book: Hari, Alok, Ryan are the protagonists of the novel and Neha is Hari’s girlfriend.
Hari narrates the story in the novel. He is average in studies, seems confused but he keeps all three demons together, always chooses the easy way, falls in love and also with the daughter of his department head. Ryan is the son of rich parents, is a born rebel. He hates his parents, because he feels neglected by them. Alok belongs to a typical lower Indian middle class family, he is burdened with a lot of expectations and responsibilities.
They are roommates and study in the same department at IIT. These three oddball students become close friends after their different senior sessions and support each other on every occasion during their four years at IIT, despite their personal struggles and many problems. They are far from the image of an IIT graduate and generally resemble an average middle-class youth.
After reading this book, I think the movie ‘3 Idiots’ will be based on this book. Every character in this novel is crafted with utmost care. I advise everyone to read this novel. This book is truly amazing.

This particular book is an exemplary masterpiece of the author – Mr Chetan Bhagat and published by Rupa Publications. The book is about the three friends – Hari, Ryan and Alok, the three youngsters, awkwardly together sculpting their career in IIT and sourcing from three distinct socio-cultural backgrounds.
The book explicitly showcases the life of three students in one of the nation’s best college, their initial perceptions, the expectations and the respective contradictory actual experiences, the bitter part or the challenges faced by the students (rather naming it Eustress or Distress, the unexplained unexpected assignments, the distractive ailments, which drain out their actual focus, leaning towards bisexual friendships and its acidic consequences)
With the passage of time, the fourth vibrant personality bonds this unified but diversified companionship, i.e., non other but the daughter of their Professor – named Neha. The daughter of the strict demanding IIT Professor, Neha and Hari (the so called Boyfriend of Neha, the Five pointer average student) had started engaging in nerve racking dates and further..
The author in this particular book ‘Five Point Somene’ has depicted different scenes and situations about the characters: the initial introductory journey as the strangers in the class, in the Q – where they were ragged by the seniors, their parties on the roof of the Institute, their Library and night hour challenges with the assignments, the dates and long walks with the girlfriends, and many many more.
The writer with his specialized skills has represented every aspect of the legend in such a lifelike manner, so that the reader gets completely mesmerised and involved in the scene, as such as carried forward with the scene. Sometimes the words are so expressive and verbal, the reader instantly possesses a hair rising feeling as if he/she is a primary observer to the same. The text of the book makes the reader curious and a bit addictive to know what happens the next.
Thus, the book is a must read book and with a strong desire once again.
