SOMETIMES THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU IS THE ONE WHO HURTS YOU THE MOST
It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover follows the story of Lily, who had a life of hardships where nothing came easy to her. Coming to Boston from her little hometown in Maine, she is passionate enough to start her own business. There she meets Ryle Kincaid, a gorgeous neurosurgeon, who is thriving in his career and aims to be best in his field. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe little arrogant but also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do the thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
Colleen’s writing style seamlessly combines a traditional love story with modern-day realism, blurring the edges in a way that highlights that special place where stories and real life meet. It Ends with Us creates relatable protagonists in Lily and Ryle, whose personal growths do not erase their faults. Also, the secondary characters in this book, Lily’s parents and specifically Ryle’s sister and her husband are wonderful additions to this beautiful story.
In the author’s note to the book, Hoover explained that many events in the book were inspired by real happenings of her and her mother’s life. She wanted to show how morally gray domestic abuse can seem when true, romantic love is at stake. Hoover makes her readers fall deeply in love with each of her book’s characters. She develops her characters so well as if you know them.
This book is extremely triggering and shocking at places. However, even with the sensitive subject matter, Hoover wrote heartbreaking scenes with such ease that the story flowed well enough that I didn’t feel the need to take a break.
The cover of this book shows shattered lilies, which is significant to the story. Obviously, the main character’s name is Lily, and she is really into gardening and flowers, but lilies are also the first flowers that Ryle ever bought for her and having them shattered on the cover foreshadows how their story is going to go.
Reading It Ends with Us was an emotional rollercoaster. It made me cry, smile, and reflect on the importance of self-love and courage. Colleen Hoover has created a story that isn’t just about falling in love but also about knowing when to walk away. I would absolutely recommend the book. It Ends with Us is a must-read for anyone who appreciates stories that balance romance
with hard-hitting realities. Whether you’re a fan of Colleen Hoover’s previous works or new to her writing, this book is sure to leave an impact.
Right from the opening dedication, you know that you are about to read a deeply confronting novel.
