Jai Nimbkar, a prominent Indian English writer, has made a significant contribution to feminist literature. Her writing is associated with the third phase of feminism, which emerged in the 1920s and continued beyond, known as the female phase during which women writers developed their own taste, imaginative power and created literature based on their own experiences. Her novels “Temporary Answers” and “Come Rain” are social documents where women are given a superordinate place. In these novels female characters are more significant and courageous than their male counterparts.
Her novel “Come Rain” explores cultural and gender issues through a thought-provoking story. The novel revolves around Ann, an American woman who is the protagonist of the novel and Ravi, an Indian man; both meet and marry against the wishes of Ravi’s parents while Ravi is working in America. Ravi, who holds a Ph.D. in Botany, decides to return to India and settle in his hometown Sangampur, located in western Maharashtra. Ann accompanies him, and the story unfolds as they navigate the challenges of cultural adjustment and personal aspirations. Ann handles these challenges with remarkable bravery and resilience, showcasing her strength and independence. Initially, Ann struggles to adapt to Indian culture, the climate, and the conservative mindset of her in-laws and Ravi’s relatives. However, after giving birth to a son, she gradually earns their acceptance. Meanwhile, Ravi struggles to establish himself professionally in India and eventually decides to return to America. Ann, however, refuses to go back and chooses to stay in India independently, symbolizing her transformation and deep connection with her new home.
The novel also touches on family dynamics, exploring differences between Indian and American cultures. Ann observes the male-dominated environment in India, which contrasts sharply with the freedom women in her family enjoy back in America.
The title Come Rain is symbolic, reflecting Ann’s longing for renewal and growth, much like rain bringing new life to the earth. Despite facing several challenges, including her discovery of Ravi’s past affair with a widow named Usha, Ann maintains her dignity and chooses to live with self-respect.
Jai Nimbkar, who admires Jane Austen, Ann’s journey mirrors that of a Jane Austen heroine—bold, independent, and courageous. We find some similarities between Austen’s women characters and Nimbkar’s women characters to some extent. For instance, Ann of “Come Rain” and Elizabeth of “Pride and Prejudice” both are courageous and know the importance of self-respect. In both stories, these women are more significant than their male counterparts.
The novel is easy to read and focuses on everyday life in Maharashtra. The characters are ordinary people, and their lives are well-described. The plot is simple, with some side stories alongside the main one. At times, it feels lengthy, but overall, the story is interesting.
When I finished reading the novel, I kept thinking about Ann. She stays in India alone after her husband, Ravi, leaves. Her situation and emotions stayed with me long after I closed the book.
Nimbkar’s nuanced portrayal of cultural differences and gender roles makes this novel an essential read, particularly for women readers, as it offers valuable lessons on self-respect and resilience.
