प्रत्येक समाजाचे सांस्कृतिक वैभव दाखवणाऱ्या काही गोष्टी असतात. पु. ल. नी बटाटयाच्या चाळीतील इरसाल व्यक्तींना हाताशी धरून अक्षरशः चाळीची बखर लिहिली आहे. या बखरीने चाळीचे विश्वच उभे केले आहे. ज्यात सांस्कृतिक चळवळ, भ्रमणमंडळ, निष्काम साहित्यसेवा, गच्चीसह झालीच पाहिजे आदी १२ प्रकरणांचा समावेश आहे.
